Boxing After Mayweather

September 14th 2013

Mayweather vs Alverez

Two undefeated boxers. Is Mayweathers age going to catch up with him? Is Alverez going to be too powerful and strong. These were the questions asked before the fight. But once again Mayweather came out on top with an amazing display of speed and excellent defence.

This fight broke records. Highest amount received for tickets and highest amount of ppv revenue believed to be around $150 million dollars ($75 ppv x 2.2 mil buys). Mayweather has 4 fights left on his showtime deal, which will probably be his last 4 fights. Who else is out there to help the sport of boxing and be the face of the sport once Mayweather is gone?

Floyd is one of a kind. He sells fights. He knows how to promote himself and his fights. Which is why he gets paid top money. Also it helps that he has amazing boxing skills and he is at the top of his craft. But in my opinion no one comes close to him. So therefore once he has gone, who is going to be the fighter to carry boxing and be the face of it?

Adrian Broner. He has the potential to be a big star and he is making some noise in the boxing world. He recently defeated Paulie Malignaggi and is set to fight hard hitting Marcos Maidana at the end of the year. He is close friends with Mayweather and is sort of like a younger version. He has the skills and at the age of 24 is still very young and has a long future in left in boxing. He is able to hype a fight and back it up with his skills. So he could be the one to replace Mayweather.

Andre Ward. He is at the top of his game and is beating world class opponents every fight. He went through a bunch of killers in the super 6 super middleweight tournament and came out on top. He has a strong division in which he competes which should bring some exciting bouts. But I do not see him attracting many ppv buys. He can not hype a fight as much as others so I do not feel he has it in him to be the new face of boxing.

The Klitschko brothers. Huge draw in Europe. They know how to get the job done. They keep there opponents at he end of there jab and then the big hammer overhand right. They come across as robots. Excellent at implementing there gameplan, not so excellent at capturing the publics interest.

Saul Canelo Alverez. Still so young and has a lot to offer the sport. He will be of the boxings stars once Mayweather has retired. However his lack of the English language may not capture the publics interest. You need to be able to speak English in order for the american audience to feel a connection with you.

In my opinion, once Mayweather retires it will be a big loss to boxing. They would have lost the biggest name and attraction and they will suffer. They need another star to come out of the woodwork because the current crop are not cutting it. The premier division, the heavyweight division needs a new exciting Mike Tyson like fighter. Someone who excites the crowd and goes for the knockout. Someone to take it to the Klitschko brothers. This currently is not there. Boxing is lacking exciting and this is killing the sport.

Boxing needs to start looking for its new big star. And quickly.
